The fury and disbelief that greeted images of African leaders bunched up in a bus in London just goes to show our attitude towards public transport.
That having our excellencies on a bus ride smacked of disrespect for us in this side of the world. The gall! How could they put our leaders on the lowly means of transport, we wondered! Some even likened them as a party of pupils going on a school trip. Even worse, they did not have the whole of bus to themselves but had to share with counterparts.
It just did not seem to make sense to many of us. What a missed opportunity to flaunt opulence on the global stage. We wondered how they even got to the point of accepting the treatment. Never mind that in other parts of the world, leaders have been seen bussing or cycling to work on every normal day.
