Strathmore University stunned Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in the Kenya Universities Sports Association (Nakusa) Nairobi Conference games.

Hosts Strathmore recorded a slim, but invaluable 1-0 win over CUEA in the entertaining encounter.

It took James Gichana just two minutes to put Strathmore on the driving seat with a well-taken goal. Thereafter, the hosts dominated the rest of the action, but were guilty as well of missing several scoring opportunities.

On resumption for the second half, Strathmore pilled more pressure on their opponents, but Catholic’s goalkeeper Emmanuel Kumai was equal to the task.

Commenting after the match, CUEA’s coach Malaki Ouma said his players had a good match, despite the loss.

“The weekend outing was great after a 2-0 win over Technical University of Kenya (TUK) and one defeat. We are going to prepare well for our match against UMMA next weekend,” said the tactician.

Strathmore had defeated UMMA 2-1 in their other encounter.

With the win, Strathmore tops the table standings with 41 points from rounds of 19 matches with three games left in the fixtures. Mount Kenya University (MKU) Nairobi campus are second with 39 points from 19 rounds of matches.

TUK is third with 36 points from 20 matches, while Africa Nazarene University has 34 points from 19 matches.

Only four teams will qualify from Magadi Road and Thika Road zones in the Nairobi Conference.

In other results: MKU defeated Co-operative Bank 4-1 in a one sided encounter. MKU had earlier defeated Africa International University (AIU) 5-1 and won 2-0 over TUK.

Machakos settled for a two-all draw against Daystar, who later recovered to win 2-1 over AIU.
