Five common hair mistakes you should avoid

Good, healthy hair does something to your confidence and self-esteem. And to be honest, it may make or break your day.

Ask any queen about bad hair days and the horror stories you will hear are countless.

When your hair isn’t cooperating, you feel less attractive and that is probably why many women spend wads of cash on products, salon visits and hair attachments to make up for what nature left out.

Interestingly, your hair would thrive if you didn’t make the mistakes most of us are guilty of.

So, whether you’re transitioning, have relaxed hair or natural hair, here are some things you may want to consider dropping from your hair routine

i.Over or under washing

Unless your hair is very oily, you shouldn’t be washing it every day. Allow natural oils from your scalp to reach the tips then you can wash after a few days. Failure to do so will leave your hair dry thus triggering dandruff and breakage.

Washing less, on the other hand, can lead to build up dirt as the pores on your scalp become congested with the excessive oils and hair products that you have been using.

Strike a balance between the two and aim to shampoo two to three times a week depending on your hair texture and type.

As you stretch between washes, apply a coat of dry shampoo to your hair and brush it to distribute it evenly through your tresses. This will condition and add extra shine to your hair.

ii.Skipping hair trims

If you’re going for length, this may sound scary. The benefits, however, outweigh your fear of losing a few inches. At the end of the day, no product can fix damaged ends.

Regular trims keep your hair healthy and luscious. Getting a trim every eight weeks keeps breakage at bay by getting rid of split ends.

iii.Using hot water

Washing your hair while taking a shower sounds like a great time saving idea but it does more harm than good to your hair.

Due to the high temperature, it will wash off the natural oils from your hair leaving it dry and brittle.

It may also activate oil production and strip your hair of color.

Instead, use warm water to dilute oil secretions, remove dirt and improve blood circulation then finish off with a cold-water rinse that leaves hair looking shiny.

iv.Vigorous towel drying

Both men and women are guilty of using a towel after a hair wash. By rubbing your hair, this may cause damage to your follicles leading to frizz, breakage and dull looking hair.

Instead, blot your hair gently, preferably with a microfiber towel or soak up the excess water with a soft t-shirt. If you’re in a hurry, you can air dry using the cold setting of a blow dryer.

v.Brushing wet hair

Do not use a brush on wet hair. It will tug on your mane and cause some serious breakage and split ends. Washing your hair while taking a shower sounds like a great time saving idea but it does more harm than good to your hair.

Work in sections and use a conditioner or detangler to smooth out the knots.
