When it comes to putting on belts, there aren’t a lot of rules to abide by, thankfully. However, the few rules that exist are broken every day. It is hard to know what belt matches with what outfit specifically, considering, at a glance, belts work with all outfits.

Belts come in various types; there are elastic, cummerbund, metal, big, slim, chunky and statement belts. Depending with what you want to put on, any of these belts can elevate a basic looking outfit.

Here are tips on to help you wear your belts:

Slim belts

Every closet should own at least one slim belt, preferably a black one. Black is neutral meaning it will match with everything in your closet. Slim belts can be used to spice up a variety of outfits. Take a blazer, you can put on a slim belt on top of it to give it a more chic look. Or to fasten a loose fitting dress or shirt.

Avoid putting on slim belts with denim trousers, in most cases the trouser will clump together and the belt will move above the waist because it won’t be able to fit the large trouser loops. The outfit will look uncoordinated and careless.

Tip: Always remember loose fitting clothes like: skirts, dresses and shirts look better with slim belts, to help give the outfit structure.

Chunky or statement belts

These are the belts with large buckles or with extra-large widths. They are harder to pull off and portray a bolder fashion sense.

Statement belts can be put on to accessorize outfits like trench coats or blazers. When you want to go all fashion killer out, these are the belts to make your best friend.

These belts can also be used to create boundary between a shirt and skirt outfit. The more colorful they are the better when being used to break monotony in an outfit. They can also be used to add a bit of colour to a dull outfit.

Tip: Do not put on statement belts with small summer dresses or fitting shirts, they drain out the rest of the outfit.

Buckle belts

This is the most common type of belts. It is for both men and women and easy to add to an outfit. Most people use these belts to fasten and hold up their trousers and they do a perfect job.

When selecting a waist belt or buckle belt always ensure the belt is a perfect fit for the trouser loops, your outfits will look more planned and organized. Furthermore, ensure your buckle has an interesting design to make your outfit look sleeker.

Tip: When you want your outfit to stand out, always go for belts with patterns and brighter colours. They are more fun to accessorize and blend with other colourful outfits. Also when you constantly second guess your outfit when trying on a belt, follow your gut.

What is worse: a fake smile or a grumpy face?
