A fuel tanker transporting 34,000 litres of diesel overturned at Kamandura in Limuru, Kiambu County on Saturday.

The tanker was heading towards Mai Mahiu from Nairobi direction.

Police arrived at the scene on Saturday morning, August 27 to prevent residents from siphoning the fuel.

Authorities said the driver of the tanker lost control of the vehicle, causing it to hurtle off the road before overturning at 3am.

Police said another tanker had been dispatched to the scene.

"The fuel will be transferred into the empty tanker and taken to where it was destined," said an officer at the scene.

Emergency response teams, familiar with the transportation of fuel by road, said the tanker involved in the crash had 34,000 litres of diesel.

The accident caused a traffic snarl-up on the Kamandura-Mai Mahiu road.

As of the time of publishing this story, the tanker was yet to be removed from the scene.

The crash occurred metres from the scene where an LPG truck burst into flames on February 13 this year, leaving at least seven people injured.
