As most people know, a wedding dress or bridal gown is a clothing worn by a bride during a wedding ceremony. The choice of colour and style symbolizes the importance of culture and in some cases their religion.

Thanks to Queen Victoria who popularized white in the 19th Century it has become the ‘it’ colour many brides go for.

Some of the wedding dresses readily available include shades such as ivory, eggshell or ecru.

In many societies, the colour white has long been associated with purity and virtue making it one reason why some brides choose to wear white.

Here are reasons why brides wear white on their wedding day.

i. As a sign of purity

Most brides wear white on their big day because they associate it as a sign of pureness and cleanliness.

iii. Tradition

The colour white has been the colour choice since the 19th Century when Queen Victoria popularised it as an essential part of bridal fashion. The tradition has been passed down from generation to generation that during the wedding a bride has to be in white. So why change it if it isn’t broken?

iv. As a symbol of innocence

Most brides tend to go for a white or ivory gowns because it signifies innocence.

v. As a symbol of virginity

It symbolizes the chosen one and wearing the white dress meant one was holy and not of sin. A bride who has kept herself would pick this colour to celebrate her purity and communicate to the whole world that she has been faithful in keeping herself pure.

vi. Because they can

White and variations of white look good on practically every skin tone. For this reason, many brides tend to favour this colour. Plus it is on this one day that you alone can wear white without competing for attention from someone who wore the same colour. Unlike other colours, white will stand out especially on a big day like this.

If you could travel back in time, who would you want to meet?
