7 beauty tips to live by

Make these habits part of your daily routine and reap the benefits for years to come.

1. Use Sunscreen

You need sunscreen daily even when it’s cloudy. Apply on your face, neck, and the back of your hands as all of these spots are exposed to UV rays which can be aging. Although people of colour have a built-in sun protection factor, it’s not enough to completely protect us against harmful UV rays that can cause skin cancer and premature aging. If you have sensitive skin, try using natural alternatives such as almond oil, coconut oil, carrot seed oil, or shea butter.

2. Get enough sleep

Beauty sleep is essential for repairing the skin. If you want to look younger and healthier, it is vital that you get quality sleep. Sleep deprivation leads to dull skin, dark under eye circles, puffiness, and can contribute to other skin problems such as acne and psoriasis. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase as this is gentle on your skin, and ensure that you change your pillowcases at least twice a week.

3. Go to bed with a clean face

Sleeping with make-up blocks your pores which can lead to breakouts. You should wash your face even when you’ve not worn make-up. Dirt, environmental pollutants, germs, bacteria and excessive oil accumulates on the skin during the day and should be cleansed away so that the skin can breathe and be rejuvenated.

4. Drink Water

Start the day with a glass of water to flush out toxins and waste products from your body. Drinking water hydrates the skin which helps us look better. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day and increase the amount during warmer months of the year.

5. Eat Beautiful food

The food that you eat is even more important than what you put on your skin. Eat plenty of water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables which cleanse your system, help to reduce inflammation and contribute to blemish-free skin. Limit your intake of processed and fried foods which have a negative impact on the health of your skin.

6. Moisturize your skin

It still surprises me how many women skimp on this part of their beauty routine. It’s important to moisturize not only your face, but your whole body, even the parts of your body that cannot be seen. Moisturizer is to the skin, what water is to the body. It keeps your skin hydrated which keeps it working properly. When your skin gets dry, it cracks and peels and becomes more prone to damage. This leads to wrinkles and premature aging. Keep your skin healthy and youthful by moisturizing daily.

7. Master the art of dry body brushing

Dry brushing before you shower has numerous benefits to your skin and body. It aids in circulation and lymphatic drainage, it exfoliates the skin and reduces the appearance of cellulite by removing toxins. It’s invigorating and contributes to tighter, glowing skin.
