Bad boy gone good!

Living

Who is the real Shaffie Weru?

I’m a fun loving Nairobian who grew up in Kibera, Nairobi West, Golf Course and South C. I’m the firstborn in a family of three. We are two boys and one girl.

You are among the most successful radio presenters; how did you achieve this?

I’m very hardworking. Contrary to what people think, I listen a lot to what my fans have to say. I mingle with them every time I’m out there, and I try to integrate their ideas with mine. I’m also passionate about what I do and I try to stay as focused as I can be.

You are also a self-proclaimed ‘raverend’ (party animal). Where do you get all the energy?

The energy comes from the passion and the love I have for my job. I also love adding zeros in my bank account every day. Some of the zeros are added at the bar! If I decide to snooze I will definitely loose. My life is all about targets.

At one point, you said you were in love with two women. You finally settled with Joan. What led to the change of heart?

Change is inevitable in one’s life. I was young then, and now I’m a grown up!

Are you still a bad boy?

I was a bad boy back then; before I hit the big-three-zero (30). Back when Kibaki was still president. Things have changed now. I’m not a boy, I’m a man; a responsible father. I have abandoned the bad boy title.

How do you manage to maintain a cordial relationship between your baby mama Debbie Asila?

It’s just a matter of respect. Period!

Two months ago, a blog claimed that you had a relationship with an underage girl. How did you deal with this?

That was the lowest moment of my career. For the first time in my career, I thought of taking legal action. I later had a change of mind when I released it’s just but the life I chose.  Only God can judge me. I thank my fans who can differentiate truth and outright nonsense.

What are some of the challenges you have faced as a celebrity?

Being misunderstood and always put on the spotlight everyday of my life. The greatest challenge is getting calls from family and friends when false stories are published. Coming up with explanations is always an uphill task. Some of my young fans also assume that life in ‘Shaff-Ville’ is always a bed of roses. I sweat for every single cent I own.

What is the most annoying habit you wish radio listeners could drop?

Using the word sema when they call on air. I’m also guilty of using that cliché.

What don’t people know about you?

I’m an open book. What you see is what you get!

What has been the biggest struggle in your life?

Being a good parent. I’m still perfecting the art of being the greatest father. I’m almost there.

 What’s one thing you regret?

I’m a man of no regrets. I have one life and I live it like there is no tomorrow.

What do you do in your free time?

I spend it with my family because I rarely get free time. I’m the ‘raverend’ remember.
