Modernity meets antiques

By Dorcas Muga-Odumbe

Mixing modern items with antiques keeps a room fresh, adds contrast and depth, and ultimately creates balance. The combination creates a surprisingly homey yet contemporary decor...

Some people think that mixing antique and modern décor brings out a disastrous effect. The misconception that antique furniture looks good only in traditional settings is a myth.

Many homes I have visited look modern in spite of using antique furniture. For antique furniture to look great in a modern setting, choose pieces that have clean lines and a lot of visual appeal.

 Giving antiques a modern look:

• A bright-coloured cushion on the old chest would look amazing in any living room.

• A single antique chair looks great when placed in front of a fireplace. The fireplace mantel in a modern room can become a focal point if a single, ornate, antique piece is placed on it.

• A rustic dining table paired with modern aluminium chairs will create a terrific contrast.

• Add a piece of modern art in a room filled with antiques to create a pop.

• Put modern lamps on an antique sofa table or vice versa.

• A modern light fixture in a room full of antiques is a powerful statement. Likewise an ornate fixture in a modern room stands out.

• Use an old chest drawer as a side table or coffee table. Put a cushion on the chest and turn it into a seat.

• When your living room and dining are one long room, use a divider with traditional motifs to separate the two and add character to the room.

• Chairs with fine lines and without cushions create a polished look in the dining table.

• Use antique doors as attractive centrepieces.

• Match a contemporary sofa with a low coffee table that is antique and get an amazing look.

With antique pieces, less is always more. It is better to have one or two good pieces that give a good look to the living room than crowd it with a lot of furniture.

Harmony is also important as it gives the living room a perfect look. The final look depends on your taste and the pieces you choose.
