Outrage after tourists and guides filmed blocking wildebeest crossing

A viral video showing tourists and their guides on foot near Purungat (South) bridge in the Maasai Mara, seemingly obstructing a wildebeest crossing, has sparked outrage online.

In the footage, tourists are seen standing on the riverbank as a herd of wildebeest gathered on the opposite side for their perilous crossing.

Their presence appeared to confuse the animals, some of which wandered into the strong currents, prompting criticism that tourists were interfering with natural wildlife behaviour.

Narok County Government's Department of Tourism and Wildlife quickly issued a clarification.

Maasai Mara Chief Park Warden Stephen Minis said the spot is a designated rest and viewing area with washrooms and hippo-viewing points, supervised by rangers.

"At the time, the bridge was flooded and vehicles were waiting for debris to clear," he explained, adding that guests had exited their vehicles as permitted.

Minis dismissed bribery claims, warning that any ranger or guide demanding money would face disciplinary action.

"If any ranger or guide is found to have demanded money from tourists under such circumstances, it would be a serious violation of our code of conduct and will result in disciplinary action," he said.
