A look into Elsa Majimbo and Rihanna’s friendship

News
 Elsa Majimbo and Rihanna.

It’s not every day you get to be friends with a huge pop star such as Robyn Fenty, aka Rihanna, but for 19-year-old comedian Elsa Majimbo, anything is possible.

It first started in September 2020 when Majimbo revealed that she landed a lucrative deal with Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty Cosmetics as a brand ambassador. “My 19-year-old self literally got a chance to work with Fenty Official. I’m so proud!!!! Thanking the Fenty fam they’ve been so amazing and Rihanna for this amazing brand,” posted the hilarious Majimbo on her Instagram page.

In a video shared by Fenty’s official Twitter page, Majimbo is seen using her comical skills to market a variety of Rihanna’s sunglasses, while joking about being the pop star’s best friend. Captioning a video she shared on her timeline from Fenty, the comedian thanked Rihanna's team for selecting her for the role.

“Just a @FENTY campaign for my best friend @badgalriri. Rihanna doesn’t necessarily know that we are BFF's, but that’s okay, she will one day. Thank you to the fam at @FENTY for believing in my vision,” posted Majimbo.

In December 2020, Majimbo could not hide her joy after sharing a screenshot showing Rihanna’s verified page following her. Being the only Kenyan followed by the Barbados-born singer and actress, that must have been a big deal for the young comedy sensation.

Come 2021, and Majimbo’s hilarious content seems to be getting an even bigger audience. On January 30, Rihanna shared one of the 19-year-old's Instagram reels on her timeline, gaining over 19 million views. But what made that moment truly special for the comedian was that Rihanna only had two other reels.

Expressing her joy for the support shown by the founder of Savage X Fenty, Majimbo posted, “The fact that Rihanna has three reels and I’m one of them. Me watching a video I made for the 30th time cause it’s on Rihanna’s TL. Receiving support from @rihanna had me dying. Our King! Our Rihanna.”

Over the weekend, while celebrating Rihanna’s birthday, Majimbo revealed the letter she got from the singer at the beginning of her career. In the letter, the Work hitmaker said, ‘You a baddie and you know it. And your reel was fire!!’ and signed it off as ‘Your childhood friend.’

“Riri sent me this letter at the beginning of my career and has given me immense support and good advice. You know how much I adore you, have an Amazing and incredible birthday. Sending you great love. Happy Birthday,” said Majimbo.

Hours later, the young comedian posted a screenshot of her conversation with Rihanna, saying, “I WILL NEVER CHANGE MY PROFILE PICTURE. PERIOD.”

Majimbo rose to fame in 2020 after her hilarious videos went viral on Instagram and Twitter in March following a nationwide lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She has since been featured by international media platforms such as The Guardian, New York Times, CNN, BBC, and recently Forbes.

She also recently won the prestigious E! People’s Choice Awards in the African Social Star category. Majimbo has a following of 2.2 million on Instagram and over 278,000 on Twitter.
