Singer Teddy Kalanda Harrison, famed for his hit song Hakuna Matata, is in need of medical help. Kalanda, who is one of the founding members of Them Mushrooms, is appealing to the public for help in raising funds to cater for corrective surgery on his leg.

Confined to a wheelchair since late 2017 and cautioned by his primary caregiver about the chance of him enduring loss of motion should the specialised treatment not be conducted, Kalanda explained that an examination revealed that three of his discs are damaged. “The doctor told me I would be paralysed from my waist to my legs after an x-ray showed that three of my discs had been damaged. I stayed in the hospital for about two months, but I still need to undergo surgery," said Kalanda.

A plight that has seen the Jambo Bwana, Habari Gani? hitmaker’s family turn to the government, urging it to launch a programme to cater for the needs of personalities who help put Kenya on the map. "Hakuna Matata is a song that has promoted Kenya internationally. It has also been used a lot in the promotion of tourism around the country," stated the founding producer of Big Matata Productions.

Just before Kalanda went public with his situation, award-winning broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela was weeks earlier also appealing to well-wishers to help him offset his medical bill. Mbotela, who had been admitted at the Nairobi South Hospital needed help to offset Sh1.1 million.

"He is due for discharge Friday, November 13, 2020, as per the doctor’s recommendations to continue with home care treatment. The medical bills have accumulated to Ksh.1, 105,498.78 as of today (Friday) and have to be cleared upon discharge. Any assistance given towards offsetting this bill will be highly appreciated,” Stephen Mutavi, the hospital’s Human Resource Manager, was quoted as saying.

A month earlier, Radio Citizen presenter and Inspekta Mwala actor Munai General alias Abdi was also in the news after he took to social media asking well-wishers to assist him in clearing a Sh2.5million bill. Munai was in hospital for treatment following a road accident along Murang’a Road that left him with minor injuries.
