Award-winning gospel artist Peter Omwaka, better known by his stage name Guardian Angel, opened up to Behind the Fame about struggles in his early years, experience with homelessness, and how he found God.

During the interview, he invited us into his home studio, where he created all his music at that time. He mentioned that things had changed significantly for him since his humble beginnings, stating, "Rada yangu ilibadilika. Kama yangu inaweza kubadilika pia yako inaweza."

Reflecting on his past, Guardian Angel admitted that he does not talk much about his upbringing as he prefers to express himself through music.

He revealed that his childhood was tough, having to figure out how to survive on his own from a very young age. At one point, he lived on the streets and even spent a few months in jail. He lived with his mother for only four years during his childhood, after which he had to navigate life on his own. However, throughout his hardships, he found solace in music.

When asked how he managed to cultivate his talent despite the difficult circumstances, Guardian Angel explained that he grew up participating in music festivals and playing the drums. Initially, he didn't sing gospel music but instead focused on secular music. It was through his life experiences that he got to know God and became a born-again Christian, leading him to decide to sing for God.

Guardian Angel reminisced about the gospel industry when he first joined at the age of 18. During that time, all he needed was a good song and good production to get airplay. However, he acknowledged that the industry has become more complicated and political over the years.

Despite the challenges, he found support from other artists in the gospel industry, like "DK," who played a crucial role in helping him record his first song in Form 3.

His big break in gospel music came in 2014, but it took him another three years to achieve significant success with his hit song "Nadeka" in 2017. Guardian Angel emphasized that success in the industry takes time and consistency, advising aspiring artists not to seek shortcuts.

Regarding fame, Guardian Angel remained grounded and humble. He highlighted the importance of respect and how he values his relationship with his wife.

He referred to her as his queen and manager, emphasizing that they build their business together and keep the money within their home.

He values her support and shared that disagreements were inevitable, but they worked through them because they both shared a vision for the empire they were building together, which extended beyond just music.
