Acting Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has warned opposition leaders against interfering with the country’s security system.

Speaking at Kisii Cathedral Church, the CS said the Ministry of Interior had mapped the country’s hotspots to stem violence during the election period.

He once again dismissed the opposition National Super Alliance's (NASA) adopt-a-polling station strategy, saying no unauthorised person would be allowed to hang around polling stations.

Dr Matiang’i explained that the law was clear on who should be stationed at the polling station and that he would not allow a few politicians to incite armed youth to camp at polling centres.

“The security sector is ready for the elections. Those planning to cause mayhem will face the full force of the law. Leaders must respect the Constitution and independent institutions,” said Mataing’i.

He said his office has held meetings with the IEBC team led by Wafula Chebukati and agreed on the modalities of carrying out the next election.

“We can’t live outside the law. We have experienced trouble before and lost lives because of elections. I have no right to disrespect the Constitution that I swore to protect. Let Kenyans remain assured there will be no problem in the country,” he said.

The CS told NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga and other opposition leaders that they must respect the law if they expect to lead Kenyans.

“Our work is to protect Kenyans and support IEBC. I will not entertain threats when it comes to safeguarding Kenyans’ interests,” he maintained.

He said that for the few days he has worked in the Security docket, he has learnt to consult and work with 'outermost sincerity' and would not bend the law for any leader.

The CS said leaders should strive to preach peace instead of inciting Kenyans based on the tribal divide.
