Opinion: Would six-piece voting format guarantee good governance?

This whole debate amounts to the famous 'tyranny of numbers'. In our country, both in the past and with the present regime, it is clear the ruling party or the majority in both Houses draw their strength from their respective backyards.

Jubilee and NASA principal need these numbers so as to pass bills in Parliament. Nobody would wish for a situation where bills take forever in Parliament due to pressure mounted by the opposition. Secondly, even if the nominations were shambolic, the rise of 'Independents' bodes ill for Wanjiku.

Many of the independents lost to their competitors with such a huge margin, indicating the voter no longer requires them come August 8.

A majority of the primaries' losers argue that they are still needed and quite a number of supporters have advised them to run independently... a statement I find hard to believe.

My take is that the six-piece voting pattern means well for the nation and governance. It should be adopted and accepted by all Kenyans irrespective of their coalition.

The so-called independents association is nothing more than a section of Kenyans who can well be described as selfish, power-hungry and cannot humble themselves by accepting defeat. Let them remember the Swahili saying... 'Asiyekubali kushindwa si mshindani'.

They should accept and move on, period. Take a look at developed democracies like USA, UK or even Canada. Democrats, Republicans, Conservatives etc. are the real deal, we can't say good governance is lacking in those countries. Who cares about the Independents, anyway?
