Governor Peter Munya wants the Government to make good its promise to start a new university college at Mariene in Central Imenti.

Speaking in Meru, Mr Munya said the pledge by President Uhuru Kenyatta was made during his last tour of Meru in February 2015.

He said the delay to commence the project had led to speculation that some influential individuals had succeeded in having the project moved to another constituency.

Munya, who spoke while launching Gituaga Dispensary, said a budgetary allocation would end the speculations.

“The President made a pledge and all we can do is remind him to fulfil it and calm the expectant residents,” said the governor.

He also said another pledge to increase to 300km the length of roads to be constructed under the low-cost annuity programme had not been fulfilled by the Jubilee Government.

Sh300m for Project

Meru County Assembly Majority Leader Ayub Bundi claimed President Kenyatta had promised a delegation of Meru leaders last month at State House in Nairobi that Sh300 million will be allocated for the project in the 2016-17 budget.

“We hope the promise would be fulfilled because the residents are pushing us to demonstrate against the delay in commencing the project,” said Mr Bundi.

Meanwhile, the county government plans to construct three key roads that are under the national government.

Munya said his administration had decided to take that step because the Government, through the National Government Constituency Development Fund, had delayed in upgrading the roads thereby inconveniencing local residents.

The governor said his administration will from tomorrow begin the upgrading of the Mikinduri-Mulika-Mukothima and Mikinduri-Gatithine and Giithu-Ncheme-Mau roads, all in Tigania East sub-county.
