Nakuru, Kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Prof Shem Wandiga to serve as Egerton University’s Chancellor.

Prof Wandiga was once the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Finance, at the University of Nairobi.

Prof Wandiga replaces Ambassador Bethuel Kiplagat who is also the Truth, Justice & Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) chairman.  The new chancellor has a Ph.D from the Case Western Reserve University, US.

Speaking during the institution’s 28th graduation ceremony, Prof Wandiga urged the government to continue supporting universities by providing resources.

He said the university was committed to providing quality services.

He told the 756 graduands who were awarded various degrees and diplomas to embrace discipline and hard work outside the institution.

He lauded the university senate for continuing to develop, revise, re-design and re-engineer various curricular and academic programmes in line with the Commission for University Education requirements.

He called on researchers to develop proposals that will attract international funding to supplement government funding.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof James Tuitoek, took issue with recent reports that most students hire people to do their research and write theses.

Prof Tuitoek said graduates from the university were strictly supervised during their research work to curb such malpractices.
