Primary school heads vow to cover syllabus before KCPE

Primary school head teachers have pledged to cover the syllabus during the extended part of the term to ensure pupils excel in the final Standard Eight examination.

Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association (Kepsha) national Chairman Joseph Karuga said tutors were not offended by the extension of the term imposed to cover for lost time following the recent three-week nationwide strike.

Mr Karuga said various stakeholders in the education sector had held a consultative meeting with top officials at the Education Ministry and Kenya National Examinations Council and agreed to get back the time wasted.

“The move by the Government to extend the school term to recover time lost during the strike was deliberated on by all stakeholders in the education sector, including Kepsha, before a common understanding was arrived at,” said Karuga.

He was addressing head teachers during an education workshop in Mtwapa, Kilifi County.

He defended the teachers’ right to down tools, arguing it was not intended to punish children.

“Teachers should not be seen as people who have no interest on education of the Kenyan children when they go on strike demanding for better salaries and conducive working environment as that is one of the avenues for them to fight for their rights,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Karuga announced that his association has rescheduled its annual delegates conference to end of August, saying it will be held between August 31 and September 5 in Mombasa County.
