Improve border security

Kenyan and Tanzanian security officials yesterday met in Kehancha, Kuria West, to discuss ways of dealing with the rising cases of insecurity across their common border.

Border points are a major concern for security officers. Owing to the movement of people and goods across the border, instances of insecurity have been reported.

Apart from smuggling, in some places people have been known to cross over from one country to engage in crime in a neighbouring country and then cross back to safety after the fact.

The proliferation of guns in areas along borders is a result of cross border crime. Such criminal acts heighten tension and sometimes sour diplomatic relations, for instance in the case of West Pokot, where cattle from Uganda is occasionally stolen and driven into Kenya.

Once, President Yoweri Museveni sent his army into Kenya to recover the stolen cattle, raising an uproar.

President Museveni has never tired of castigating the Pokot for this action and calling on our President Uhuru Kenyatta to take action. The necessity for joint and regular security operations across borders is therefore crucial in minimising incidents of cross border crime.
