Meru’s Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders want the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and all other government projects halted and the funds diverted to combat coronavirus.

The elders said the virus has the potential to wreak more havoc and eradicating it supersedes all other projects.

They opined that all political and developmental activities that consume large amounts of public resources should stop.

Secretary-General (Operations) Josphat Murangiri and his deputy Benjamin Mugambi yesterday said all projects should be second to coronavirus, and the government should concentrate funds and efforts in checking it.

“We are in a crisis in Covid-19. All activities that consume money should be stopped, and all the money directed to fight coronavirus. We would like to hear the President directing that cash set aside for BBI and others, be directed to the campaign against it,” said Murangiri.

Murangiri added that the country was in a state of ‘war’ and all the arsenal should be deployed to fighting it.

“We don’t want to see political meetings. What would be the need of doing politics when we are losing people we want to help? We are pleading with the president to direct BBI funds to the virus. The president will leave a big legacy when we succeed to defeat the disease,” he said.

“We support the government of the day, but the BBI meetings funds should be used to stop the virus. We want to see our counties are given the necessary equipment to fight the virus. He (Uhuru) will leave a big legacy when he saves lives,” Murangiri added.

The two elders further pleaded with the Head of State to take action against Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha, following the remarks he directed at Gitonga Mbaka, the Uasin Gishu Director of Education.
