Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has accused some police officers of trying to sabotage her charity event in Ruiga, Imenti Central, where she was donating a cow to a needy family on Wednesday, October 18.

The Governor said she was shocked and alarmed by the unauthorised deployment of armed police officers at a peaceful meeting, which was part of the One Dairy Cow One Needy Family program, a government initiative to improve the livelihoods of vulnerable families in the county.

She claimed that the police officers were acting on orders from some unnamed individuals who wanted to disrupt her event and tarnish her reputation. She denied allegations that she faked an arrest by the police, saying that she was only trying to protect herself and the beneficiaries of the program from harassment and intimidation.

“This was not a political rally or a demonstration. This was a simple act of kindness and compassion for our fellow Meruvians who are struggling to make ends meet. We did not break any law or cause any trouble. We were just there to deliver a cow to a deserving family, as we have done many times before,” she said in a statement.

She called for a thorough investigation into the incident, and demanded that those responsible for deploying the police be held accountable for their actions. She said that such an excessive show of force was unwarranted and unacceptable, and that it violated her constitutional right to hold meetings and programs within the law.

She also urged law enforcement agencies to respect the mandate of the Governor and refrain from interfering with her development agenda. She said that she would not be deterred by intimidation tactics from fulfilling her noble mission of achieving inclusive development in Meru County.

“I appeal to the relevant authorities to urgently address this matter and provide the public with answers. Our commitment to transparent governance remains unwavering, and we will not allow the intimidation tactics witnessed today to deter us from our noble mission of achieving inclusive development in Meru County,” she said.
