Governor Kiraitu Murungi has contracted Covid-19, Meru Health CEC Misheck Mutuma confirmed on Friday.

According to Mutuma, the Governor is in self-isolation.

Recently, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga also tested positive for Covid-19.

The former Prime Minister on March 11 told Kenyans that Covid-19 is real and urged them to observe all the stipulated measures. 

“This evening, I received a briefing from the doctors who have conducted numerous and complicated tests on me for the last two days... While the tests were several, one important result, which I have authorized the doctors to make public is that I have been found to have been exposed to Covid-19,” he wrote.

The third wave of the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreck with new infections, hospitalisations, ICU admissions and deaths.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of health reported 17 deaths, pushing cumulative fatalities to 1,954 lives lost to the pandemic. ICU admissions stand at 114 across the country. There were 793 patients admitted in various health facilities and 2,250 others under home-based care. The country recorded 1,225 new infections in the last 24 hours from a sample size of 7,308 with a positivity rate now at 16.8 percent.
