Choppies say remains committed to Kenyan market

NAIROBI, KENYA: Choppies Supermarkets has said it is committed to its operations in Kenya

In a brief to the media on Monday, Choppies refuted recent claims which cast doubts on its business in Kenya.

“Unfortunately, the stories have not been backed by facts but hearsay. Choppies Supermarkets shareholders remain committed to the business,” part of the statement said.

The retail chain noted that they have full confidence in the Kenyan market.

“In fact, plans are underway to inject more resources into the operation so as to serve more customers as our Group financial muscles remain strong.”

The Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied Workers Assistant Secretary General Mike Oranga said they had not heard any issue touching on the welfare of its members “that called for our intervention”.

“The Union has been in contact with the management of Choppies and our members’ monthly wages and salaries have been paid in time,” said Mr Oranga.

The retailer said it was focused on giving value to its customers through the provision of high-quality products.

“We have full confidence in our management, staff and customers,” it stated.

In the last one week, Choppies has come under sharp focus over claims in delayed payments to their creditors as well as the remuneration of its employees.

This has led to some creditors cutting their supplies to the retailer while others have threatened court action over the delayed payments.
