Jubilee could have hit re-election jackpot with Social protection plan

The dream of a social protection plan whose role is to protect the elderly and the disabled from extreme forms of poverty through monthly stipends is quickly becoming a reality in Kenya.

The Treasury is spending over Sh1 billion on the programme every month and beneficiaries would take the monthly expenditure to more than Sh2 billion a month. First started on a pilot study in a few counties, it is now a countrywide phenomenon and it is putting a smile on the faces of the senior citizens.
