Pay us our dues, KCSE exam markers tell Knec

Secondary school teachers who marked the 2016 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams have complained of delayed payment.

And the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has asked the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) to pay the teachers promptly.

Kuppet Secretary General Akello Misori told The Standard that it was disheartening for the teachers to be kept waiting at a time when most of them had school fees and other responsibilities to take care of.

"Knec chairman George Magoha promised to make payments available by December 23. Now we are well into January," he complained.

Mr Misori said he had not heard from the Knec boss since December.

"In the past we would wait for days without end for the payments, but with the new regulations and promise from Prof Magoha, we didn't expects a delay," said a teacher in Kisumu.

Zablon Awange, the Kuppet executive secretary in Kisumu County, urged Knec to fast-track the payments, saying the examiners were responsible for the quick release of the 2016 KCSE exam results.

"Most, if not all, the examiners are parents with school fees to pay and delaying their payments by over three weeks when they had already prepared to have the money in good time is unfair," said Mr Awange.

Primary school teachers who marked the 2016 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams have been paid.

Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers Association national chairman Shem Ndolo said he could not comment on the matter as Knec had not shared its payment schedule with him.

"... the payments could even be done tomorrow," Mr Ndolo said.
