The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been facing criticism and biasness allegations from some quotas including the opposition, the clergy, activists and even the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU).
These dissenting voices should not be ignored as they represent a huge portion of the population.
The electoral’s body has been tainted as far as running of its affairs is concerned. The ‘Chickengate’ saga was a grave matter that has been swept under the carpet.
The BVR scandal is no different than their coincidental failure in the 2013 General Election. Other accusations include being partisan when dealing with political parties. CORD accuses the body of favouring Jubilee.
The confidence and trust that the public had in it has rapidly faded away. Thus basing on the same, even if IEBC were to conduct a free and fair election, the result will still be questionable and will be disputed either way.
Going by the current heightened political temperature and tribalism, IEBC as currently constituted is not advisable to conduct the upcoming General Election as this may be a major violence trigger. The history of 2007 might haunt us again and this is the least we need as a country.
The damage has already been done and it’s almost impossible for IEBC to win back the public’s confidence and trust.
The storming of IEBC by the CORD supporters on Monday was uncalled for nevertheless a very strong message was conveyed and it should not be ignored at all costs.
Therefore IEBC’s love for this country and their own wisdom should see it wise to voluntarily vacate the office without being adamant on their constitutional process.
