Cases of wife battery on the rise, says lobby

Domestic violence in Mombasa County has risen by two per cent this year up from 68 per cent last year, a study by a rights group reveals.

The research carried out by Coast Women in Development (CWID) also reports that men are victims of beating but do not report to police or cooperate with researchers. At least 97 per cent of the cases are reported by females while three per cent were men.

Cases of violence were perpetrated by intimate partners and people well known to the victims. CWID Programmes Director Betty Sharon said Wednesday.

“Majority of the cases reported at the organisation are physical attacks, with 80 per cent perpetrated by intimate partners," she said.

Men’s fear

Men have been accused of violating their partners’ rights, with the report citing socio-economic empowerment."domestic violence is on the rise because women have changed and are now taking up the role of the man in the society,"she said.
