CORD leaders want President Uhuru Kenyatta to form judicial inquiry into Westgate attack

KENYA: CORD leaders have piled pressure on the Government to form a judicial commission of inquiry to unravel the mystery surrounding the Westgate Mall saga.

Led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Senator James Orengo and MP Jakoyo Midiwo said it was high time the Government formed the inquiry to investigate last week’s invasion of the Westgate by unknown assailants.

Raila said the Government ought to hold accountable those who failed to perform their duties as required by law.

“Even though we are in the opposition, in case of any predicament befalling the country, we work with the Government as a team,” said Raila.

He added that the Government has to be answerable to its citizens by disclosing who failed to perform their duties.

Orengo and Midiwo maintained that a political accountability is needed to come to the bottom of last weekends’ attack where innocent Kenyans lost their lives to the hands of assailants.

Sporadic insecurity

The leaders were speaking yesterday in Siaya town where they pitched camp campaigning for outgoing Governor Cornel Rasanga.

Midiwo petitioned security forces to perform their duties to tackle the increased sporadic insecurity being witnessed across the country.

“The security forces aren’t performing their work as they are seen following politicians and harassing motorists and boda boda operators instead of securing their property and lives,” added the Gem MP.

Midiwo took a swipe at the Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku and his Defence Counterpart Rachel Omamo, arguing that President Uhuru Kenyatta should expedite their sacking.

“If Kenya was a civilised country then the concerned cabinet secretaries should be relieved off their duties for being incompetent and in effective,” said Midiwo.

Midiwo said he would table a motion in Parliament seeking to question the role played by the Kenya Defence Forces.
