With the anger, pain, and confusion arising from the post-election violence, Kenyans were desperate for answers — answers to hard questions on the lips of everyone, especially of those directly affected. After the comprehensive inquiry by the Waki Commission, there was hope that truth would be unearthed and perpetrators of the violence brought to account.
But, when finally the results were released, matters came to a head. We could not agree on what we must do to deal with the ugliness of the realities before us. While some called for a local tribunal, it is clear that many Kenyans had lost faith in local institutions and structures. The resulting chorus was near unanimous: “Don’t be vague, go to The Hague”.
