Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga and Speaker Mwambire released on Sh50,000 cash bail

Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga, and Speaker Teddy Mwambire have been released on a cash bail of Sh50,000.

Together with two others, Chonga and Mwambire were charged with participating in unlawful assembly.

“Ken Chonga, Patrick Chiro, Teddy Mwambire, Victor Katana; On the 19th day of July 2023, at Mtwapa area in Kilifi South Sub-County of Kilifi County within the Republic of Kenya, took part in a procession (maandamano) and chanted anti-government slogans thereby causing a member of the public to reasonably fear that you were assembled to commit a breach of peace,” a snippet of the Charge sheet reads.

The case is coming up for mention on August 7, 2023.

Chonga and Mwambire spent the weekend in police cells after Magistrate Martha Mutuku deferred their bail application ruling to Monday.

She ordered they be detained at Port Police Station.

They were arrested on Wednesday, July 19, morning as they prepared to take to the streets of Mtwapa Town in Kilifi as part of the nationwide Azimio protests.
