Pupil commits suicide after being asked to repeat class

A class six pupil from Mombasa committed suicide after she was asked by the school to repeat class six against her will.

The 16-year-old pupil from Amani Primary School hung herself inside their house in the midmorning hours using a piece of cloth.

Rehema Sidi was supposed to repeat Standard Six after her class teacher recommended that she repeat having attained below average marks.

Her report form indicates that she had scored 207 out of 500 marks an improvement from first and second term tests where she scored 176, and 191 respectively.

Her class teacher’s remarks read below average.

Sidi’s mother Sada Ngada Mwazuma said that the daughter had confided in her that she wanted to change to a different school because she had been asked to repeat.

The school has remained tight-lipped on the issue of asking Sidi to repeat with the headteacher Abdalla Ali claiming they are investigating the issue.

However, the school and the parents have issued contradicting information about Sidi going to school.

Ali said Sidi had not shown up at the school since the opening day and they had no information about her whereabouts.

The headmaster said that her parents had come to school to inform them about her whereabouts or objections.
