It is 100 per cent occupancy in most tourist hotels at the Coast, say hotel keepers

Hotels and accommodation facilities at the coast are reporting booming business with bookings expected to reach 100 per cent by yesterday.

The Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers Coast branch Chief Executive officer, Dr Sam Ikwaye, said last-minute bookings are expected to shore up occupancy levels in most hotels.

"Aggressive marketing and good packages have contributed to the increase in guest numbers during this year's festive season," Ikwaye said.

The official said overall projections for the New Year show positive growth with a good business environment.

"The 'handshake' between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader, Raila Odinga gave the tourism industry the much-needed boost as there was renewed confidence, especially in the tourism sector," he said.

Direct flights

A spot check at several top hotels revealed that the guests' numbers were increasing as Christmas day approached. Others have confirmed bookings well into the New Year.

Hoteliers have also lauded the entry of direct international flights into Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Mombasa's Moi International Airport, which has contributed greatly to the growth of the industry.
