President Uhuru Kenyatta urges teachers to be good custodians of students

President Uhuru Kenyatta has challenged teachers and other people charged with taking care of students to ensure they are more responsible to avert loss of lives.

While sending a message of condolence to the families of seven boys from Saint Martin’s Depores Boys School in Murang’a who drowned in the Indian Ocean, the President said the incident should be a lesson to all schools.

He said schools must put in place measures to avert such tragedies in future. “As a government we are with the bereaved families during this difficult time. I hope this will be the last time the country witnesses such an incident and I call upon those charged with the responsibility of taking care of our students to be responsible to avoid loss of innocent lives,” said President Kenyatta.

He was speaking at Mumbi grounds in Murang’a town during a funds drive for the construction of a retreat and conference centre for Murang’a Catholic diocese. He gave a contribution of Sh6 million for the project.

He reiterated the government’s commitment in the fight against illicit brew and second generation alcohol saying there was no turning back. “We will not relent in the fight against illicit brew. Alcoholism has killed youth and broken families, and should not be allowed to continue,” he said.

The President called on the public to support the war against alcoholism and crime adding that the government will support youth addicted to alcohol get jobs and other sources of livelihood. The Head of State promised to visit Ihura stadium next week where hundreds of alcohol addicts are undergoing rehabilitation.

In his sermon, Bishop James Maria Wainaina of Murang’a Catholic Diocese called on Kenyans to be patriotic and uphold the rule of law.
