Towards the end of last year, we saw the opposition led by their Major General Raila Odinga holding demonstrations against the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC)

The opposition was doing all that to demand the exit of IEBC commissioners. The opposition alleged that the commissioners could not be trusted to oversee a free and fair election in August this year.

Raila and his team vowed to continue with their demonstrations until the commissioners leave office. Jubilee, on the other hand, tightened the noose saying that the commissioners should stay. They assured them that they will remain in office despite the pressure from the opposition.

The National assembly leader of majority leader Aden Duale together with other MPs like Denis Waweru of Dagoretti South, Waihenya Ndirangu of Roy Sambu and others wanted action to be taken against Raila because he was causing bloodshed, looting, and destruction of property.

Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery talked tough against the opposition saying that they will be met with full force.

He said that he cannot allow that to happen while he is watching. Nkaissery further told the opposition that they have enough teargas with other special equipment that will help the government deal with the opposition during the demos.

Meanwhile, the IEBC Chairperson Issack Hassan felt he had the backing from Jubilee side. In fact as the National Assembly Justice and Legal affair Committee was trying to convince them so that they quietly resign they vowed not to.

They told the Committee that they will not accept that they are wrong neither will they change their mind and exit.

According to them, they were ready to go to jail than resign with dignity as some of the politicians were telling them.

They further said that they did their best and no one should accuse them of any wrong done.Issack Hassan said that they would rather go to jail to protect their innocence and integrity.

He also said that no intimidation will force them out of office. According to him, the IBEC crisis was not supposed to be handled by removing them rather the political divides coming together and agreeing on the way forward.

These makes me wonder was Issack Hassan and his team playing with our minds or they were just talking for the sake of talking. The other day I saw the new IEBC Chairperson and other new commissioners taking up the leadership of IEBC.That is when I believed that the nine commissioners had resigned.

The next move I was waiting for is for the former commissioners to do what they had earlier vowed to do ‘to go to jail’ but to my shock, they are still free people. My fellow countrymen let us mean what we say and say what we mean.
