Ex-bandits get Sh2.4 million grant to initiate businesses

Seven groups of youths of former bandits have benefited from a Sh2.4 million grant from the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) to initiate income generating ventures.

County NDMA Coordinator Gabriel Mbogho who issued cheques of between Sh150,000 and Sh300,000 to the groups said the youth had requested for support to initiate activities that can be alternative sources of earning a living.

He said the youths surrendered their illegal weapons and registered groups to engage in productive activities.

"We chose to empower these groups so that they can shun the outdated vice and engage in meaningful ventures that can earn them an honest living," said Mbogho, adding that there are over 60 such groups in the county.

He said the groups will be monitored to ensure they use the funds for the intended purpose.

The NDMA coordinator appealed to donor agencies and other well wishers to support young people who have renounced cattle rustling and want to earn a honest living.

David Ngoritah, one of the youths, said more young people were ready to turn a new life if they are given the necessary financial and moral support.

"There are a number of youths who are willing to surrender their weapons, but they don't have alternative sources of income. If supported, we believe they will abandon the vice," said Ngorita.

He further asked organisations involved in peace efforts in the region to use the youth who have renounced banditry as peace ambassadors in their campaigns.

Most of the groups that benefited from the grant said they will engage in farming and also vowed never to engage in the vice again.
