Nyanza leaders back Ruto, Raila alliance ahead of 2027

[File, Standard] Nyanza leaders have reaffirmed their support for President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections, saying the region stands firmly behind the UDA-ODM partnership. They spoke days after President Ruto attended the Devolution Conference in Homa Bay before meeting local politicians, including Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi and Opiyo Wandayi, and Governor Ochillo Ayacko, in Awendo Township in Migori County. Former Nyatike MP Omondi Anyanga, speaking in Homa Bay on Sunday, praised the President's cooperation with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing it as a "new dawn" for the region. "For decades, Nyanza has been at the forefront of democratic struggle. Today, through the broad based government, we see a new era where political competition does not mean enmity," said Anyanga, who chairs the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority. Accompanied by several Migori politicians, Mr Anyanga said the alliance between Ruto and Raila was helping bridge political divides and foster unity across the country. They pointed to several government projects underway in Migori, including the Lower Kuja Irrigation Project, which they said would turn the county into a food basket once complete. They also cited road construction in Awendo, Suna East, Suna West, Uriri, Nyatike, Rongo, Kuria East and Kuria West, as well as fisheries development on Lake Victoria and reforms in the sugar sector. The group welcomed the appointment of Nyanza leaders to senior positions, including Mbadi and Wandayi, Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency in the Executive Office of the President Eliud Owalo, Interior PS Raymond Omollo, and several ambassadors and board chairpersons. At the same time, the politicians urged the government to complete the Lower Kuja project, push through sugar sector reforms, provide structured support for artisanal miners in Macalder, Masara and Kitere, and expand youth empowerment through capital, mentorship and innovation opportunities. Politician William Odhil called for closer collaboration between the national and county governments, saying Migori could not achieve its full potential without such partnership. In a political message, the leaders declared that Migori residents were "fully behind the broad-based government" and would support the President's re-election bid in 2027. "This spirit of unity is what will transform Nyanza and Kenya at large," said Anyanga. The immediate former Rusinga MCA Okuku Miregi hailed the visit. Miregi said Ruto's deeds in South Nyanza region had never been seen before. "The development projects we have acquired through Ruto's government tells us that the people of this region are in his heart. What he has done in this region is unprecedented," Miregi said. He urged Nyanza residents to support Ruto in his development agenda. "Ruto has shown us that he is a true brother. Let us support him both socially and politically," Miregi said.
