KCA University accredited as centre of research

[File, Standard] KCA University has achieved a significant milestone after receiving accreditation from the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) as a centre for reviewing social science research protocols. The mandate covers research by undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff, and the surrounding community. Following a comprehensive process that included a site visit, training, and mentorship of the university's Institutional Scientific and Ethics Review Committee (ISERC), the accreditation is valid until October 2027. KCA University's ethics review process involves screening applications, selecting reviewers, and issuing ethical clearance to researchers, who must then seek a research permit from NACOSTI before beginning data collection. The ethical oversight ensures that researchers adhere to principles safeguarding human and animal rights throughout their projects. This accreditation strengthens the university's capacity to ensure ethical standards are upheld in research, particularly in the fields of Biomedical, Environmental, and Social Sciences. KCA University invites researchers, collaborators, and stakeholders to engage with its ISERC to promote ethical, innovative research that meets the evolving needs of society. The institution is committed to submitting annual reports to NACOSTI, which will include a review of research projects, updates on ISERC membership, and any challenges faced in the review process. The university's Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Isaiah Wakindiki, celebrated the accreditation, linking it to the institution's 2024-2028 Strategic Pillar on excellence in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. "It will ensure that all research undertaken at the university and beyond adheres to the outlined ethical standards, fostering trust and credibility in the institution's research outputs," he stated. Prof Wakindiki also emphasised the positive impact the accreditation will have on cross-institutional collaborations and the commercialization of research findings, enhancing the university's role in societal and economic transformation. "We have been elevated to a key player in ethical research oversight and strengthened our capacity to contribute to the global research community. By fostering a culture of integrity in research, we ensure that the knowledge we generate is impactful, responsible, and valuable to society," he said. KCA University amongst others is now authorized to evaluate and approve scientific research proposals on behalf of NACOSTI. The accreditation not only elevates KCA University as a key player in ethical research oversight but also reinforces its commitment to excellence in promoting responsible, innovative research. "By fostering a culture of integrity in research, we ensure that the knowledge we generate is impactful, responsible, and valuable to society," Prof Wakindiki added. Last year, KCA University began the process of supporting research by launching a Research and Innovation Fund with an initial capital of Sh10 million. The fund aimed at fostering research that empowers society through mentorship and the development of innovative solutions. Recently, Teresia Nyawira, Principal Scientist at NACOSTI, pointed the importance of upholding ethical principles, particularly respecting autonomy and maintaining transparency, literacy, and adaptive governance. She also outlined the challenges posed by AI in research, stressing the need for creativity and ownership of research projects in an era of rapid technological advancement. "Ethical research is about avoiding harm to participants, protecting their privacy, and ensuring objectivity. Researchers must take extra care to avoid bias or breaches of confidentiality in their work," she said.
