Kenya Revenue Authority has consolidated 12 scanners in major depots to retrict the penetration of illegal imports.

KRA deputy commissioner in southern region, Nicholas Kinoti said that the scanners with Optical Character Reading technology will be monitored from Mombasa and Nairobi stations to look through cargo entering the ports and seize any illegal consignment.

“We have 12 scanners, being controlled and monitored from Nairobi and Mombasa Control Centres. The scanners are non-intrusive verification tools to support the verification process without opening the containers,” said KRA’s south region deputy commissioner.

The scanners will be integrated in Mombasa port, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi Inland Container Depot and Container Freight Stations to image all containers entering and leaving the depots.

Kinoti said, “Any consignment that does not answer to our standards is taken for further verification.”

The project hailed as National Integrated Scanners Solutions will help in enhancing international and local trade, high revenue collection and quick cargo clearance in the ports.
