Six suspected thugs were on Monday morning killed in two separate attempted robberies in Kirinyaga district and two AK47 rifles with 24 bullets found on them.
Also found were two sets of motor vehicle number plates that are believed to be fake.
Five of the suspects were killed in Wang’uru area as they allegedly planned to commit a robbery at a local market.
The sixth one was killed about a kilometer away as he escaped towards Mbeere, police said.
According to Central deputy PPO Gideon Amalla, the suspects planned to rob businessmen in the area who were selling rice.
Officers from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit trailed the suspects to the area where they were lying in a car waiting to strike.
According to Amalla, the gang started to drive off at high speed on spotting police prompting a brief chase that saw them mowed down by bullets.
Monday is the market day in the area and the site is usually flooded with business
people dealing in rice and other goods.
An AK47 rifle loaded with 19 bullets were found in the salon car. In the second incident, the slain suspect was also found with an AK 47 rifle, which was loaded with five bullets.
Amalla added they are investigating to know the owner of the car and sets of number plates.
