Lumumba urges youth to rise above tribal politics

Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission Director PLO Lumumba has challenged youth to rise above tribal politics and shun vices that hinder peaceful coexistence.

Speaking during the 33rd graduation ceremony at Daystar University, Lumumba observed that the youth are a key factor in peace and conflict resolution as they stand the chance of being used as elements of violence, hooliganism and conflict making.

"The elite and power hungry politicians use the youth in their communities to cause chaos so that they can achieve their selfish interest," said the anti-corruption boss.

He said the country must uphold peace and democratic principles.

" True peace in society starts with true inner peace of the individual members of the society in their personal capacity," said Lumumba.

The University Chancellor Florence Muli-Musiime challenged universities to be at the forefront in tailoring their training programs to embrace the dialogue on peace and social justice.

"What we teach must ignite a genuine desire to promote peace within. Universities need to develop a culture of scholarly activism that prepares graduates to do battle with social injustice," she said.

Vice-Chancellor Timothy Wachira reiterated the university’s commitment to expansion and development in line with the Millennium Development Goals and Vision 2030.

"This university is committed to the realisation of Vision 2030, with respect to ICT and innovations," he said.

This year, the university celebrated the graduation of 978 students who were conferred various certificates.
