Kenya to send team to Africa Kickboxing Championships in South Africa

Kenya will send a team for the Africa Kickboxing Championships to be held in Barrabne, Johannesburg in South Africa on August 26-28, officials have confirmed.

With only eight weeks to the event, Kenya Kickboxing Federation is yet to finalize the final squad heading for the continental championships with the final selection trials set for United States International University (USIU) in Nairobi next month.

“We are out to come with a formidable side that will take part in the continental championships after serious and rigorous selection trials,” Kenya Kickboxing Federation Secretary-General Willice Ng’ang’a told Standard Sports.

Ng’ang’a said the event will be held under the auspices of the World Association of Kickboxing Organization (WAKO) –Africa Championships.

The penultimate selection process was held at Madison Square Garden in Nakuru over the weekend where Kenya Defence Forces lifted the overall title after they won six gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

Hosts Nakuru were runners-up with five gold, three silver and one bronze medals while the third position was scooped by Dragons Club who won three gold and four silver medals.

Hardcore followed with one gold and three silver medals while Ruai trailed with two bronze medals.

Some of the players selected in a provisional squad were junior weight Caroline Chepchirchir of Dragon, bantamweight John Kariuki of Hardcore, Menengai teammates of featherweight Alex Dimba, junior lightweight Joel Oloo and featherweight Isaac Kibe and the KDF duo of welterweight Davis Omwanza and middleweight Medizeki Milimo.
