Afrocinema drama plays out at my doorstep
November is the Friday of the year, and party season is on! When we were young, this is the time we would remember to be nice so that Santa could bring us nice presents in December.

Of ‘boda boda’ riders and their source of daily bread
A boda-boda, whether bicycle or motorcycle, is a source of livelihood for many in Uganda. There have been suggestions to rid Kampala of these death traps, but none has taken root.

A royal wedding devoid of ancestors’ blessings that went awry
While I was growing up my mind was fed on Enid Blyton with princes and knights in shining armour turning common girls into princesses.

Ours is literally a man eat man society
Uganda is known as the food basket of East Africa and we are blessed with fertile soils, and an abundance and variety of foods. It seems for some, eating the fat of the land is not enough, and they have resorted to consuming human flesh. We have few mortuaries and also in some cases, witchcraft is afoot.

Minister blames rape on indecent dressing
Did you know that indecent dressing is ‘an open invite to rapists’, at least according to Ugandan Youth Affairs Minister Ronald Kibule, who is also Mukono North MP?

Angry tax collectors undress crooked boss
Government is not a good payer even when collecting money hand over fist, thus fostering a culture of something called corruption, as the citizens struggle to make ends meet.

Sly Yoweri’s ingenious re-election strategy
The Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) is carrying out a recruitment exercise throughout the country to boost their numbers, and bring in fresh blood. Our army is the best because we recruit the best of the best, and weed out puny inferior specimens.

With shoot-to-kill in effect, trigger-happy cops are having a ball
When you hurt my brother, you can be sure my whole family will be out to seek vengeance. The police force must have subscribed to my family maxim, as they have now been urged to enforce a shoot-to-kill order on thugs who are targeting police officers and steal their guns. The Flying Squad police unit will be the enforcers.

HIV medicine too bitter a pill for patients to swallow
With Jamaican reggae artists Konshens and Alain in town, I expected the leading story on the most read tabloid in the country to have something to do with escapades featuring the who’s who of Kampala in compromising positions.

Of rape, infidelity and hitching abride Karamoja-style
Rape is about power. Rape is not about pleasure or romance. Foolhardy is the rapist who attempts to kiss his victim, most especially if she hails from a village called Kichinjaji. You can be sure the maidens in that village have not heard of Mills & Boon — romance books that propagate the myth that when a woman says no she actually means yes and wants to be “taken by force”, impregnated and deserted. In those books when the man returns a few years down the line, the woman’s heart has mellowed and she can be wooed and walked down the aisle to marital bliss.

Can boys be sexually exploited?
Divorces in Uganda are heavily stigmatised and difficult to obtain. Usually, the man moves on and marries again while the woman stays celibate or gets into ‘quiet relationships’.

Pain of giving what belongs unto Caesar
Uganda Revenue Authority (Ura ) took out space in the leading local dailies and published a list of shame — government ministries that default on tax. We all know that the small man is the easiest to chase and, therefore, the poor mwananchi is the one bearing the brunt.

Battle between landlords and tenants gets nasty
Despite the “pay before you sleep” policy on rent, defaulting is the norm with many tenants vanishing in the wee hours of the night when they have over-stayed their welcome

Our MPs are Very Influential Persons
I know we expect our leaders to be corrupt, lie and steal to achieve their personal agenda, but the MP for Aruu County Samuel Otto takes the cake!

Ugandans’ creative ways of spreading wealth
I am sure people were surprised that many of us this side of the EAC are not living below the poverty line, even after they witnessed our president dish out about Sh8.3 million in cold hard cash, instead of a cheque that is likely to bounce. We have fewer poor people because when we eat, we eat creatively and at all levels.

Parliamentary penury lengthens the skirt
Parliamentarians are very broke chaps and they know the general public is even worse off. They have, therefore, resorted to various fundraising schemes to keep rabid creditors at bay.

Jesus died, so we drunk ourselves senseless
Easter in Kampala means all roads lead to the beach. You are probably thinking of powdery white sand and blue water with waves gently crashing on the shores. If you are lucky, you may get pale green water, a calm lake and coarse sand.
