Eldoret City Marathon lives up to expectations [Photos]

The fourth edition of the Eldoret City Marathon kicked off today in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County. The 42 km women's race began at 7 am at the University of Eldoret after all the major roads which were to be used by the athletes were blocked. The men's race began 30 minutes later.

More than 500 elite and budding athletes participated in the prestigious marathon. 

At Eldoret town, hundreds of residents showed up along the roads, cheering the athletes and encouraging them to complete the races.

A fun race of 5 km also took place where residents from various walks of life joined together in the race. John Malakwen Chepkwony, an 87-year-old man attracted the attention of the as joined the fun race to completion.

Chepkwony told the media that he was consistent in his running to keep fit and that he had been consistent in the marathon since its inception in 2018.

“I am always doing exercises and running at my village in Ziwa. Age does not matter because this way, I am keeping fit and remaining healthier,’ said Chepkwony.

Some residents followed the race aired live by Ktn News on the County screens displayed in various parts of the town.

Two hours and 22 minutes later, the leading women's marathoner Emily Chebet arrived at the Zion mall finishing line. She was closely followed by Josephine Jepkirui and Lilian Chelngát who occupied the third position.

Chebet who hails from Londiani, Kericho County said that she did not expect to win the race while thanking her trainer and parents for always supporting and motivating her.

“I had no expectations. I only wanted to compete with my colleagues and complete the race. I am grateful that I have won and I am looking forward to competing in the marathons in the future,” said Chebet.

In the mens’ category, Victor Kipchirchir Rotich who won last year’s edition of the green marathon defended his title. Michael Mutai took the second position while Josphat Bett took the third position.

Rotich said that although he had an injury, he opted to register for the marathon and try his luck.

“At first I was not sure if I could participate in this race but when I began the race in the morning I was positive that luck would be on my side. This was my day,” said Rotich, adding that he would now go back home to relax a bit before embarking on his practices.

Mutai who had participated in last years’ marathon and took position 49 said that he had been practicing often and that his hard work had borne fruits.

“I only wanted to be among that top 20 and this win came as a total surprise. I am looking forward to even better results next year,” said Mutai.
