Jeruto shines in Oslo Diamond League action

Africa 3,000m steeplechase champion Norah Jeruto chalked up a win while world 1,500m silver medalist Elijah Manangoi settled for second spot at the Bislett Games.

The meeting on Thursday in Oslo was the fifth stop of the IAAF Diamond League meeting.

The spectacle came ahead of Bahaus-Galan meet, the sixth IAAF Diamond League at Olympic Stadium in Stockholm, Sweden, tomorrow.

Jeruto won in 9:17.27 ahead of Ethiopia’s Sofia Assefa (9:17.34), Fabienne Schlumpf (9:21.65) and Purity Cherotich (9:25.82).

Jeruto’s sister Daisy Chepkemei (9:28.88) finished sixth.

The on-form Manangoi bowed to Britain’s Jake Wightman, who took more than a second off his personal best of 3:35.49 as he finished strongly in 3:34.17.

Manangoi, who has a personal best of 3:29.67, finished second in 3:34.30 and the hugely experienced Polish athlete Marcin Lewandowski was third in a personal best of 3:34.60.

Olympic 800m bronze medalist Margaret Nyairera finished third behind Rio Olympic champion Caster Semenya and silver medalist Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi.

It was a night to remember for the boy whose parents Susan Tooby and Geoff Wightman, who is also his coach, were both successful international marathon runners.

And all told it was marvelous timing by the young Briton with IAAF President Sebastian Coe and the BBC’s Steve Cram watching the race.

After his younger brother’s resounding win in the night’s Dream Mile, it would have been a home stretch for next up brother Filip, the European champion, to make it a family double. [Iaaf]
