Give us time to deliver, Kindiki pleads

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has appealed to Kenyans to stop pressuring the government over delayed developments saying its now time to deliver all that was promised on Jan 24, 2025. [Peterson Githaiga, Standard] Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has appealed to Kenyans to be patient with the government over delayed developments, saying it is now time for the Kenya Kwanza administration to deliver all that was promised. Speaking at his Karen home on Friday where he hosted a section of Maasai leaders from Kajiado County, Prof Kindiki said President William Ruto "knows he has an exam to sit in 2027". He said he will be ready for it. "That is why I have focused on development and faster delivery of the projects we promised before the elections,'' said the Deputy President. ''It is unfair to put pressure on the President to deliver on the development agenda before the end of the term he has been elected to serve. The President is serving a five-year term. He has just completed two years and some months. He is on track to deliver what he promised Kenyans," said Kindiki. He said the country is on course to achieve Universal Health Coverage and that Taifa Care has realised record registration. So far, he said some 18 million Kenyans have registered. That is more than half the total number of Kenyans registered under NHIF (9 million). In what was seen as a way to consolidate the Maa voting block that voted overwhelmingly for President Ruto, Kindiki said the government is keen to ensure the development priorities promised to the community are fulfilled. ''We are here today to review the progress of the development projects in Kajiado County. As a government, we want to hear from the people of Kajiado on what they want us to do to realise faster development in the county. We are here to agree on the development priorities because we must deliver the development agenda for the county as promised,'' said the DP. Kindiki said when President Ruto hosted county economic forums before last elections, priority projects were agreed on and put in the county economic charters. "As agreed, we are now doing a review to check where we are in their implementation. It is my duty to call for these reviews every year as the Deputy President and UDA deputy party leader. I will be updating the President on the outcome of these reviews,'' he said. He said President Ruto has been focusing on economic recovery in the last two years. ''In the next two years, we are focused on boosting key sectors of the economy with the objective of increasing earnings for the people. The economic indicators are promising, for instance, for the first time, we have not imported sugar because of adequate local production. Our farmers have produced enough for our consumption,'' said the DP. He noted that in the maize sub-sector, Kenya did not import the 10 million bags like before because the farmers produced enough. The same is happening in the sugar sector where the country has not imported the commodity of previous amounts in the last two years. He told the Maasai community that the government is setting up a huge leather industrial park in Kenanie, at the border of Kajiado and Machakos counties. The park will attract investors who will buy hides and skins from livestock farmers in Kajiado and across the country at higher prices and convert them into value-added products to be sold locally and globally. ''President Ruto is a transformative leader. Transformative leaders may not be popular in the short term because of their bold decisions that might dent their popularity temporarily. In the end, they will be appreciated because of their productive decisions. The President has decided to be a transformative," said Kindiki.
