The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has appointed Dr Adano Wario as its Acting Director-General.

Wario takes over from Wang'ombe Kariuki whose second five-year term has ended.

"We owe immense gratitude to Mr Kariuki who departs after overseeing the CAK's transformation from a department within the Ministry of Finance to a semi-autonomous institution that is held in high regard by stakeholders, nationally, regionally and internationally," the authority said in a statement on Tuesday, January 10.

The CAK noted that Kariuki had contributed to immense growth at the authority and Kenya at large, including "developing regulation and guidelines that created transparency and predictability in the competition enforcement process."

His successor Wario, who is now holding the director-general seat in an acting capacity, was CAK's Director in charge of Planning, Research and Quality Assurance.

At the CAK, the Director-General is appointed by the Board of Directors upon approval by Parliament.

The office-holder stays at the helm of the agency for a renewable term of five years, subject to a maximum of two terms.
