Andrew Amonde retires from KCB Rugby Sevens

The 2022 National Sevens Circuit marked the end of former Shujaa Captain and KCB’s Andrew Amonde stint in the sevens version of the game.

Amonde has been instrumental in spearheading KCB to a podium finish in the recently concluded National Sevens Circuit at the Kakamega Sevens.

The bankers finished second overall garnering 107points, six behind the circuit winners Menengai Oilers who obtained 113points.

KCB clinched the bronze medal at the Kakamega Sevens tournament overpowering varsity lads Strathmore Leos 21-7 in a riveting third play-off match at the Bull Ring, Kakamega County.

Kabras Sugar won the Kakamega edition while Nakuru-based side Menengai Oilers came in second.

Speaking of the team’s performance and his retirement from sevens, Andrew said he was honored to have represented the Lions for many years.

“I am truly honored to have been part of this unbelievable team. The 2022 National Sevens Circuit marks an end to my participation in the 7’s version of the team. Considering the change of squad across the different legs in this circuit, we have achieved an incredible fete,” said Amonde

Amonde will be representing KCB in the Fifteens version of the game across various tournaments including the Kenya Cup league and Enterprise Cup. He is also set to be part of KCB technical bench.

“Following my retirement from sevens, I look forward to beginning a new journey as a member of the technical bench both for my club KCB and the National team. With my wealth of experience in the game, I want to also help the youngsters who are rising through the ranks to also achieve success,” Amonde added.

Amonde has been a mainstay of the KCB Rugby Club despite the plethora of talent that the team possesses. He has been a long serving Shujaa captain for close to eight years taking the mantle since 2012.

The Kenya Rugby Union feted him with an achievement award after the conclusion of the 2022 National Sevens Circuit for his outstanding services in the Sevens version of the game.

 Led the side to win the Singapore 7s

Captained Shujaa to their maiden Olympics in 2016.

Captained Shujaa to the 2013 Rugby World Cup held in Russia as Kenya finished fourth. The forward also took part in the 2018 Rugby World and Commonwealth Games.

Played 358 matches, scoring 64 tries for a total of 320 points. He has 528 carries, 62 clean breaks and 369 tackles (all-time highest for Kenya).

Amonde has also represented Kenya in Rugby Africa Men’s sevens.

In 2019, he received a Head of State Commendation for his service to the nation.
