Becoming Michelle Obama movie coming up in a week

Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama’s bestselling memoir ‘Becoming’ will be a Netflix documentary.

The documentary which provides a look at the former First Lady’s life up-close will premiere on May 6th. The feature-length documentary will give a behind-the-scene glimpse at the life of Michelle during her 34-city book tour.

“I’m excited to share that on May 6, @Netflix will release BECOMING, a documentary directed by Nadia Hallgren that shares the stories of the amazing people I met after the release of my memoir. During this difficult time, I hope you’ll find some inspiration and joy in this film.” Michelle wrote on Twitter, Monday, 27 April.

The Netflix original boasts of an all-female production team led by director Nadia Hallgren.

Announcing the surprise documentary’s premiere date, Michelle took the moment to praise the director, Hallgren, a prolific cinematographer, who is making her directorial debut with the ‘Becoming’ documentary:

“She’s a rare talent. Someone whose intelligence and compassion for others comes through in every frame she shoots. Most importantly, she understands the meaning of community, the power of community, and her work is magically able to depict it,” Michele shared on her social media.

The memoir, ‘Becoming,’ released in 2018, sold 1.4 million copies in just its first week becoming the fastest-selling book in the U.S. of 2018. And now, the book is on track to become the most successful memoir in history having already sold over 10 million copies.

In a first-look at the film released by Netflix, Michelle is shown sitting with a group of young African American women as she shares her ‘story’ transitioning back into civilian life after her time in the White House.

The documentary is produced by the Obama’s production company – Higher Ground – which also produced 2019’s Oscar-winning documentary ‘American Factory.’

The film offers a rare and up-close look at her life, taking viewers behind the scenes as she embarks on a 34-city tour that highlights the power of community to bridge our divides and the spirit of connection that comes when we openly and honestly share our stories.”
