Man sentenced for chasing father with machete and hammer

A man has been sentenced to three months’ probation for chasing his father with a machete and a harmer.

Javan Odhiambo who appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Robinson Ondieki was placed on three months’ probation after the court found him guilty of causing disturbance.

“The accused is convicted by his own plea of guilty,” Mr Ondieki stated.

Odhiambo while taking plea accepted that he chased his father with a machete and a hammer.

The charge sheet stated that Odhiambo created disturbance at Nyalenda slums in Kisumu County in a manner that would cause a breach of peace by chasing his father while armed with a machete and hammer.

He pleaded for the court to forgive him and promised that he would never repeat such an offence.

Odhiambo, however, claimed that he was still a minor, prompting the court to issue orders that he be taken for an age assessment which in turn revealed that he was 18 years old.

The court heard that Odhiambo walked into his father’s compound on February 25, 2019, at 1400 hours while armed with a machete and a harmer.

Odhiambo is said to have approached his father who was peacefully relaxing at his compound.

The furious Odhiambo is said to have engaged his father in an argument before he started chasing him while threatening to cut him. The cause of their confrontation remained unknown even to the court.

Court documents stated that Odhiambo’s father ran while calling for help.

The documents further stated that members of the public responded to Odhiambo’s father’s cries and ran to his rescue.
