Sorrow as KCSE candidate dies of sickle cell anaemia

A 20-year-old Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate died in Homa Bay County after battling  sickle cell anaemia.
Belinda Atieno of Nyawita Secondary School in Rangwe sub-county succumbed on Tuesday night.
Atieno was pronounced dead on arrival at Matata Hospital in Oyugis town where she was rushed for medication.
According to the school Principal George Olueya, the student had been suffering from anaemia for many years.
"Her condition began worsening at the beginning of this term," Olueya said.

He said the student had to sit for her Tuesday exam papers at Nyawita Dispensary where she was rushed that morning.
But medics at the dispensary decided to refer her to  Matata Hospital when her condition worsened that evening.
Rangwe sub-county Police Commander Jane Sang confirmed the death.
" Her body was moved to Matata Hospital mortuary for postmortem," Sang said.
